How to fix a YouTube stream that no longer works?

You added a YouTube stream in Easy Multi Display and the screen stays black, or the video refuses to start? This problem is very common: it comes from an update on YouTube’s side that the built-in VLC player does not always keep up with. The good news is that the fix is simple and requires no technical skills.

Why a YouTube stream stops displaying

Easy Multi Display relies on the VLC player to read YouTube streams. YouTube regularly changes how its site works, and the small VLC file in charge of decoding these links (named youtube.luac) then becomes outdated. As a result, playback fails while the rest of the software works perfectly. You just need to replace this file with an up-to-date version to set everything right.

Step 1: close VLC

First of all, make sure the VLC player is not in use. Fully close VLC if it is open, so that the file can be replaced without being locked.

Step 2: download the up-to-date youtube.luac file

Get the corrected version of the youtube.luac file made available by our team (download link provided on the support page). This file replaces the outdated version installed with VLC.

Step 3: open the VLC folder

Open the Windows Run window by pressing the Windows and R keys at the same time, then enter the following path:

C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\playlist

Confirm with Enter. The folder containing the file to replace then opens directly.

Step 4: replace the old file

Drag the youtube.luac file you just downloaded into this folder. Windows offers to replace the existing file: confirm the replacement. The old version is thus overwritten by the new one.

Step 5: restart Easy Multi Display and test

Restart Easy Multi Display, then add your YouTube stream again. Playback should now work normally.
