Costs

Video wall server: €40,000 invoiced, or a few hundred well-spent euros?

A video wall server is invoiced at between €20,000 and €40,000. What if we optimised one for a few hundred euros?

A 12-screen wall, 3 graphics cards

The machine that fed this 12-screen wall was replaced by a server fitted with 3 consumer RTX graphics cards and 12 HDMI cables. Off-the-shelf components, easy to find and easy to replace.

Boosted for under €100

The server we have just acquired received an Intel Core i7-7700 in place of its i5, and 16 GB of memory instead of 8. Cost of the operation: under €100. You open the case, change the processor, add the memory sticks, and off you go.

The mechanics of video walls

Opening the cases, taking everything apart, understanding how it works, replacing the memory, changing the processor, optimising a configuration… and seeing the performance climb in practice. We take existing machines, we upgrade them, we give them a second life.

As Guy says, you do not throw away your car after five years and 80,000 km. You just need to find the right mechanic: one who knows what they are doing, who advises you sensibly and who does not charge you the price of a new car to repair the old one. So why should you have to replace all your IT equipment as soon as you want more performance?

Technology is not always about buying more. It is also about knowing how to do better with what you already have.

And what about dual power supplies?

Some servers have one power supply, others have two: these are called redundant power supplies. One supplies the power as a priority; if it burns out, the second takes over, with no interruption. For a video wall server, we find this a little superfluous, but some customers ask us for it. We talk about it in a short video.

Reuse, our way of working

This is not a slogan. We had already shown it with these €40,000 video wall servers that went across our workbench, and it is what keeps our second-hand equipment going.
